Celebrating Electra’s US patent for Flat Foot Technology®
It’s an exciting time at Electra right now. We were just awarded US patent # 7740262 for our innovative Flat Foot Technology® bicycle design. This is not a small feat. We created a completely new type of bike that provides an improved level of comfort and control AND allows riders to place their feet on the ground while still sitting in the saddle. It’s as if the bike is built around the rider. With this upright seating you are more relaxed and have a wider view of the road. Most people know that this technology is featured in our Townie® and 20″ Kid’s bikes but you may not know that the essence of it has also been integrated into our Cruiser and Amsterdam® collections. Electras are special. It is incredibly rewarding to be accredited with a patent for our contribution to the industry, our bicycle dealers and consumers. Some of us even joke, ‘yeah, we’re so much more than just a pretty face’. We encourage everyone to test ride an Electra for themselves and compare the difference. Our biggest hope is that you will find your perfect bike, and discover the joy and adventure that everyday cycling provides.

I recently purchased an Electra “Dodge Nitro” Streamride series promotional bike in Austin TX, from an individual who won it in the “Dodge Nitro Sweepstakes”. I has the same frame and equiptment as an Electra “Straight 8″ model. Can anyone give me any more info on this bike. I read somewhere that there were only 5 of these made. Need more info please!
Thanks
What a great resource!
Terrific work! This is the type of information that should be shared around the web. Shame on the search engines for not positioning this post higher!
Congratulations on the patent! I recently reviewed the Townie 7D on my blog, and really enjoyed riding the Townie on trails and pavement. It’s a very comfortable way to ride!
Hi Dave -
Yes, you have a very special Electra. Only 5 ever made. It was a special program with Dodge and Bicycling Magazine in 2007.

Congratulations on the patent! I’m adding the following comment/ question because I don’t see a blog for cruisers or a contact us link. I bought a superdeluxe for my wife a year ago. I called my local bike shop to order a Vince 3i today only to find out that you stopped making them! Aaahh! Have you stopped making the bullet tanks all together, or will there be a new addition coming up?
Love those Bullet tanks.
Rance
Hi Rance -
Not to worry we have some new men’s bullet tank bikes coming soon. We’ve taken them to a new level. Look for them at your local Electra bike dealer early next year.

Thanks for the Electra love. It’s a great group of guys and gals here and around the world sharing the magic. Glad to have you part of the gang.
I would like to stay in touch, What is your facebook page?
You can visit the Electra facebook community at http://www.facebook.com/ElectraBicycleCompany. Hope to see you there!
Wow I have read your article and by the way I found you website on Yahoo and I think after I read particularpost on you website especially this one I have my own opinion about what should I comment on the next hang out with my family, maybe tomorrow I will tell my familyabout this one and get debate.
I have a Vince that I love, My neighbor would like to get one also but the online catalog only shows 2 columns of cruiser bikes for men (4 for women). Are some of these models discontinued or is the website still not complete?
Hi Mike -
We are rolling out some new models now which you will start to see on the website, and are presented in our new catalog which is going out to dealers in the next few weeks. At the same time we may be out of stock on some models or they may no longer be in production but dealers might still have some on the floor. In order to keep bringing out new models you can understand that we need to stop production on others. The Vince is no longer in production so your best bet is to call a few dealers to see if they still have that model available.
Hope that helps,
Elayne
I just ordered the townie euro 8D, very hard to find but my very diligent sales person at 4th St. Bicycle in St. Pete Florida found it in Tennessee. I have done quite a bit or research on the the townies which is the only bike that I could find with the forward pedal technology. I have a bad knee and the Doc thought this was an excellent bike for me or for anyone for that matter who has knee problems.
ocean city md oct 2010 A short weekend trip. While walking the boardwalk i spied a beauty standing alone it took my breath away a BONEY FINGER 3i ON a boardwalk of over 2 miles long she stood out in aclass all of her own ,what beautiful lines I tell you nothing can come close. So on that note ,back home i’m checking one out because I have to have one!!!! Keep up the great work
Glad you found your perfect Electra Townie! Actually, four of our bike collections have patented Flat Foot Technology for added comfort and control -> Townie, Cruiser, Amsterdam and 20″ Kids’.
[...] Unfortunately, none of this provides a definitive answer to the most important question, “What is best for me?” But, it can’t hurt to be aware of the fact that isolating a particular number in a geometry chart, and using that number as a benchmark in the purchasing process, is probably not a great idea. It’s better to take a holistic look at frame geometry and try to comprehend how all the numbers work together, which, unfortunately, is not a simple thing to do. Of course, and as always, the best bet is a real test ride on a real road. Alas, if only we had more widespread support for commuter and transpo bikes at the local level, this problem with numbers would be moot! 1. Electra uses this design technique with their patented “Flat Foot Technology“. [...]
WAS WONDERING WHY YOUR GOING TO QUIT MAKING THE 24D EURO 2011. I CAN’T FIND AND DEALERS IN OHIO THAT HAD THIS BIKE. I GOT A 3D TOWINE AND WAS WANTING TO UP GRADE IN THE SPRING. WE HAVE SOIME DEDICATED OLD MEN RIDING YOUR BIKES.. RIDE AT LEAST 12 MILES JUST ABOUT EVERDAY. I’AM BATTLING CANCER AND SUPPOSE TO BE OUT OF TREATMENTS BY FEBURARY, AND WAS WANTIG TO GET BACK INTO SOME SERIOUS BIKING, THE DOS SAY TO KEEP GOING IT IS GOOD THERPHY. QUESTIONS I HAVE ARE HOW MUCH DRAG DOES YOUR GENERATOR FOR LIGHT HAVE? OF ALL THE OTHER BRAND OF BIKES WE HAVE LOOK AT, STILL COME BACK TO THE TOWNIE. REAL NICE BIKE. I HAVE EVEN MADE SOME CHANGES ON REAR SPROCKET TO A 14 TO0TH, HELPS ME KEEP UP WITH THE 21 SPEEDS. NOT A HILL BIKE ANYMORE THOUGH. THANKS FOR YOUR TIME. BOB RAY
Iam going to buy two Ticino 8d. Is the spring fork available for this bike.
It would be a good option. thanks
I just wanted tp put up a thank you.. In December I had a serious knee and ankle injury. Physical therapy was not helping much as it was basically low impact bicycle riding. I have had a I have owned a Townie for over a year. I went back to riding, it was a bit too much on the leg. My therapist suggested adding an ampedbikes electric conversion kit to it. So in late Dec I added the conversion kit and started slow but by the end of the third week my car keys sat on the coffee table and I commuted the 28 miles to work everyday sweat free and I am now back to 100%.
I’m keeping the kit as it extends my range by 15 miles. It is extremely comfortable to ride and I keep coming back for more.
ELAYNE!!!
I live in New York on Eastern Long Island, and even though there are about 10 Electra dealers out here – NO-ONE is carrying the Townie 21 D – and I need one QUICK!
